Yixuan Zhang is a PhD student in the Personal Health Informatics program at Northeastern University’s College of Computer and Information Science, advised by Professors Andrea Parker and Cody Dunne. Zhang’s research is focused on the interdisciplinary area of human-computer interaction, information visualization, and health sciences. Currently, Zhang is working on a data visualization and integration project to assist in the management of Type 1 diabetes. Zhang is interested in exploring how personal visualization supports exploration and understating health problems. Prior to joining the PhD program at Northeastern, Zhang earned her Master’s of Science from Northeastern University.

What are the specifics of your graduate education (thus far)?
I am interested in the interdisciplinary area of human-computer interaction, information visualization, and health sciences. My research has been focused on personal health informatics, and the design of technologies to support health and wellness.
What are your research interests?
I’m working on a data visualization and integration project to assist in the management of Type 1 diabetes. This tool will help health care professionals and patients (with caregivers) reflect on the data and change treatment and behavior. A side project that I’m currently focused on is how contextual information and video-aided documentation can support deeper reflection on eating behavior.
What’s one problem you’d like to solve with your research/work?
For the diabetes project, it would be interesting to explore the methods to fold and reconfigure event sequences to facilitate sentinel event alignment.
What aspect of what you do is most interesting?
In my interdisciplinary research projects, I’m interested in exploring how personal visualization supports exploration and understating health problems. What are the techniques to aid personal visualization? How does personal visualization help self-reflection on health? What is the role of contextual information in personal health informatics and how to visualize contextual information?
What are your research or career goals, going forward?
I am always passionate about the human-centered design and user experience. I want to pursue a career in user experience design and/ or UX related areas.
