BIOGRAPHY

Jethro (Shuwen) is a PhD student in the computer science program at Northeastern University’s College of Computer and Information Science, advised by Professor David Choffnes. Jethro’s research involves systems and networking and he is a member of the Networked Systems Research Group.

Previously, he received his MS (2017) in Computer Science from Boston University, during which his research revolved around performance diagnosis for distributed systems and data center networking. He also holds a BEng (2015) in Software Engineering from Sun Yat-sen University.

What are the specifics of your graduate education (thus far)?

I am a first-year PhD student studying computer science, and my research interests lie in various aspects of networked systems. Prior to Northeastern I have worked on performance diagnosis for distributed systems and novel network architecture.

What are your research interests?

I am interested in exploring different problems in advanced networking such as congestion control, routing, and network availability in a broad sense. In fact, networks were originally designed to be resilient, but today’s networks often take performance, security and intelligence into serious consideration due to the various scenarios networking related. My prior experience of working on advanced performance diagnosis tools has also made me realize how important yet difficult debugging can be to today’s distributed and networked systems. I am also interested in exploring building frameworks and tools to help people understand complex systems and diagnose problems.

What are fundamentals of monitoring, measuring and understanding networks?

What aspect of what you do is most interesting?

Systems research is a fascinating field, and I am always interested in understanding, designing and implementing systems. Personally, I like to work on problems that are intellectually challenging and practical — which systems research is all about.

What are your research or career goals, going forward?

I think my future career will be research-centric or largely research-related.

Where did you study for your undergraduate degree?

I earned my bachelor degree in software engineering at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, a nice city in the south of China. The most interesting thing about my undergrad life is probably that I intended to focus on computer graphics and had nothing to do with networking or systems in the first place. Things changed when I took a computer networks course in my junior year — I was hooked. I have worked on systems research ever since, and am probably one of a kind that still graduated with a specialization in digital media.
