Biography

Agapi Rissaki is a Computer Science PhD student from Athens, Greece. Before coming to Northeastern, she received a BS and MS in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the National Technical University of Athens. Advised by Professor Dr. Ehsan Elhamifar, she researches machine learning algorithms for high dimensional data in an unsupervised or semi-supervised setting.

For Rissaki, machine learning is interesting because it is part of the process of understanding intelligence, while also providing applications that benefit others and make our lives more interesting. She looks forward to learning as much as possible and becoming a successful researcher.

What are the specifics of your graduate education (thus far)?

I am a first year PhD student in Computer Science, advised by Professor Ehsan Elhamifar.

What are your research interests in a bit more detail? Is your current academic/research path what you always had in mind for yourself, or has it evolved somewhat? If so, how/why?

I am interested in developing machine learning algorithms for high dimensional data in an unsupervised or semi-supervised setting.

What’s one problem you’d like to solve with your research/work?

I would like to research algorithmic techniques that handle weakly-supervised learning tasks (with incomplete or inaccurate supervision).

What aspect of what you do is most interesting/fascinating to you? What aspects of your research (findings, angles, problems you’re solving) might surprise others?

The machine learning research is, in my opinion, part of a process of understanding what intelligence is. Simultaneously, its significant applications make our lives easier and more interesting. These two goals combined is what fascinates me the most about it.

What are your research/career goals, going forward?

I would like to learn as much as I can, produce important ideas and become a successful researcher.

I grew up and studied in Athens, Greece.
