About Me

  • Hometown: Concord, NH
  • Field of Research/Teaching: Algorithms

What are the specifics of your educational background?

I received my Bachelor’s of Science degree from MIT where I studied Mathematics with a focus on Computer Science Theory.  Then, I received a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, where I studied with Dick Karp and Mike Luby.

What are your research interests?

I have been focused on various foundational aspects of algorithms for many years.  This includes my work as a tenured associate professor in the Computer Science department at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, as well as my recent work in the industry, which has focused on the algorithmic fundamentals of digital advertising.

What courses do you teach?

  • Algorithms

What do you find most rewarding about what you teach? Is there anything notable or unique about the kind of students that you teach?

I enjoy the opportunity to help people understand the incredibly rich mathematical underpinnings of what is and what isn’t possible through computing.  The mathematical foundations of computing have applications throughout so much of how we interact with the world today and where the world is going.  Helping students understand this and learn how to apply it going forward has a significant impact.

Where did you grow up or spend your most defining years?

I spent my early childhood in Finland, and then moved to Concord NH, where I lived through high school.

Where did you study?

I spent my undergraduate days at MIT, which is an incredible institution in terms of its resources, faculty, and most importantly the many lifelong friends I made there.  I earned my graduate degree at U.C. Berkeley, and was able to work with an incredible group of colleagues, many of whom have gone on to stellar careers.

What are the specifics of your industry experience?

I have founded, co-founded and otherwise helped launch a number of companies located in the Boston area, in two cases also serving as CEO of the company.  All of these companies have been based on using algorithms and other advanced computer science techniques to solve real world problems in the realm of digital advertising.  These companies together have employed over 1000 people, won numerous prestigious industry awards, and created significant value for their stakeholders.
