It is an exciting time to be part of the College of Computer and Information Science (CCIS). Our students engage in rigorous academic learning and real-world co-op experiences. Our renowned faculty shape minds, spark innovation, and inspire ideas. Our research breaks new ground to solve everyday problems. Our facilities grow and evolve. And our accomplished alumni work and teach around the world—pushing the boundaries of where a computer and information science degree can take you.

Interdisciplinary academic programs

CCIS’ innovative and interdisciplinary curriculum equips students with the knowledge and perspective they need to keep pace with increasingly demanding job market, and thrive in an increasingly complex world.

Undergraduate degree – Our undergraduate degree programs provide strong technical skills and domain expertise, along with a deep understanding of the theory behind computer and information science.

Master’s degree – Our Master’s degree programs are global and individualized, collaborative and challenging, deep in faculty expertise and driven by innovative research.

PhD degree – Our PhD degree programs are driven by vibrant research, strong faculty, and interdisciplinary curriculum that offers depth and breadth in your chosen research area.

Experiential learning and co-op

CCIS integrates real-world work experience into a student’s educational experience to enhance classroom studies, advance career skills, and develop new opportunities. The goal: propel students to success after graduation by getting them job-ready from day one. With over 500 different employers participating in CCIS’ co-op, students have a wide range of opportunities in locations around the country.

Undergraduate co-op – Students alternate semesters of academic study with semesters of employment in their desired field, gaining up to 18 months of professional work experience during their time at Northeastern. Two-thirds of CCIS undergrads are offered full-time positions by their co-op employers upon graduation.

Master’s co-op – Whether switching careers or simply seeking more industry know-how, Master’s-level co-op students gain up to 12 months of relevant professional experience. They develop the understanding, awareness, perspective, and confidence needed to build a successful career.

Research excellence

CCIS research faculty work closely with students and researchers across Northeastern as well as partnering with innovative, forward-thinking companies and organizations. Our extensive range of research areas includes algorithms and theory, artificial intelligence, data science, formal methods, games, human-centered computing, machine learning, natural language processing and information retrieval, network science, personal health informatics, programming languages, robotics, security, software engineering, and systems and networking.

This transformative research yields important new discoveries that advance the disciplines of computing and information science. Our students and researchers are working to address the biggest challenges facing society—from improving the quality and cost of health care, to understanding the impact of social networks, to increasing the reliability and security of the myriad systems that people turn to every day.

Working together to change the world

The college offers a small, close-knit community with all the resources of a large, urban university. CCIS boasts an award-winning building with state-of-the-art classrooms and labs, plus thoughtfully designed meeting spaces that enhance learning and research.
